Ungraded Task 2 - The Three Stages of Educational Theoretical Cycle

1 - Experiences in course(s) that used CALL

Subject: Phonetics and Phonology
a) Audio record can be provided by lecturer by emailing  the students. Students can practice transcriptions of the words, next day lecturer might send the answers to check their mistakes.
b) Assignments can be emailed directly to the lecturer, printing out the assignment is not necessary anymore.
c) Word processor helps for auto check which have done by the workers.
d) Students can email their work any time anywhere; it is saving budget and time.
e) Group email can be provided to create interaction between lecturers and students. If there is any questions or requirements, it might be sent to the group. Both lecturer and students can get a chance to see the acquirements and the questions.


2 - Experiences in relation to the 3 stages on course(s) that use CALL

a) Behaviourist CALL
Behaviorist Call was started to apply in the 1960’s and 70’s. It was provided for students' language drills and practice.  This type of application used the computer as a tutor. It was mainly used for presenting drills, grammar instruction and translation based.

b) Communicative CALL
Students can get information and knowledge through language games, reading and text reconstruction. It gives students choices, control and interaction. Communicative CALL also uses the computer as a tool, in programmes that do not provide language material, but enable the learner to understand and use the language, such as word processors, desk–top publishing, spelling and grammar checks programmes, as used for instance in process writing.

c) Integrative CALL
Integrative Computer-assisted Language Learning is the most recent one. It is based on multimedia computers and Internet. Text, graphics, sound, animation and video type of technological developments reach the users on a single computer. Integrative CALL approaches for the various skills of language learning such as listening, speaking, writing and reading.


3 - How the concepts in the three stages of CALL are relevant to SLA theories and practices.

a) Behaviourist CALL
     - By using CALL, students are able to search for more exercise on the websites. By exposing themselves to all materials provided to assist them in learning, they could also improve their pronunciation correctly.

b) Communicative CALL
     - CALL system could enhance SLA when communicating with native speakers.

c) Integrative CALL
    - Exposure to CALL enable students to discover grammar and improve sentence structures by themselves.
